Renewable vs. Sustainable

renewable-energyRenewable energy is generated from the natural ecological cycle of sources like the sun or other mechanisms before it is stored, transported and distributed. What makes these forms of energy renewable is that the source for the energy, the sun for example, is not reduced or exhausted in the production or consumption of the end product. This means that the natural energy source continuously remains productive (unlike nonrenewable and  energy whose source is continually drains and in need of replacement).

This is good news for the earth and its inhabitants, since renewable energy production creates little or no pollution. After all, we’ve heard of the disadvantages of fossil fuels, from the damage to the environment sustained  through extraction,  and the pollution  byproducts of combustion, to the contribution to so-called ‘climate change’. Renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind, also create very little noise and produce consistent energy output, quietly. Because the many sources for renewable energy are abundant and universal, these systems are seldom governed by space or location. One example is the successful use of solar cells to power satellites in outer space.

While renewable energy may seem like a distant or futuristic concept, advances in renewable energy technology have gradually created a market where renewable energy resources now offer something for everyone. Costs associated with the installation and upkeep of renewable energy systems and consumer products continue to drop and interest in off-grid applications continues to grow. Systems which were once committed to large scale, industrial use, are seeing the light of energy retrofits and adaptations for smaller scale commercial and residential operation. Efficient, renewable energy is becoming mainstream before our very eyes. So much so that, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, solar photovoltaic panels can currently be found in over 445,000 homes across the U.S.

As energy technologies improve, so do storage and backup capabilities. People are able to feed the energy they produce with their renewable energy system directly into batteries, providing backup when the grid or naturally occurring source is temporarily unavailable. Taking this one step further, those who are producing a surplus of energy are feeding that energy back into the grid, saving money and sharing their excess with others.

Because many of the world’s sustainable energy sources are limited, new technologies and ideas in energy efficiency and renewable energy continue to appear on the landscape, driving prices down and ingenuity up. With the increased value and purpose of energy sources that are of abundant nature, dependency on global fossil fuel supplies is bound to lessen as renewable energy continues to become more accessible and practical, around the world.
