When it comes to making electric updates to your home, the process can be overwhelming, to say the least. Without a firm grasp of knowledge on the subject and the skills and tools necessary, it can be difficult to determine whether or not you’re getting a deal from you contractor or just getting swindled.

Knowing what steps you should take to vet an electrical contractor in Hawaii will not only ensure that the job is done correctly but will also guarantee that you’re paying the correct cost.

Assess your needs.

You may not know the technical terms or electric jargon, but you can at least identify the initial problem for which you are seeking an electrical contractor in Hawaii. Do a thorough examination of your home, and ask yourself a few questions.

Are services needed for a new construction or is this a renovation? Do you require a repair to existing electrical items? Is the situation an emergency or in any way dangerous? Do you need a specific service, like photovoltaic installation?

Armed with the answers to these questions, you’ll know where to start looking. Through a simple Internet search, you’ll be able to find electrical contractors in Hawaii who can provide service to your existing or new needs.

Check licensing and BBB rating.

Once you’ve found your company, do a little research on the business itself. Hawaii’s state website provides a list of electrical contractors who have the correct licensing for completing new and repair electrical services. On top of checking for the correct license, you can also research a contractor’s Better Business Bureau rating.

First, go to bbb.org, and search for the company. Once you find the company profile in the search results, click it to see their rating. Companies are graded on a scale of A+ to F. Near the rating, you’ll have the option to view why the contractor received that particular rating.

You’ll also be able to view any complaints made against the company. These complaints can encompass five different areas: advertising and sales issues, billing and collection issues, problems with product or service, delivery issues and guarantee or warranty issues.

Ask for a quote.

Before you commit to an electrical contractor in Hawaii, it’s important to ask for a quote. Usually, contractors will provide a free estimate, and this will give you an idea of whether or not you can afford the service.

Because you’re not committed to an electrical contractor at this point, you can also ask for another estimate from a different company. This gives you a frame of reference for what both companies would intend to charge. Just be sure to do your research on each company beforehand to make sure they’re on equal footing in terms of being licensed and rated well on BBB.

Though you may not know much about your electrical needs, you can do the work to become knowledgeable on electrical contractors in your area. Doing so will not only save you time and money through your electric upgrades, but it will also save you a lot of stress and deliver peace of mind.
